On an experimentally observed phenomenon on vortex rings

چکیده
In an investigation on vortex rings suggested to me by Prof. Tomaschek, we succeeded in observing a novel 18 phenomenon, namely the appearance of waves on the core of the vortex ring and unstable regions within the 19 rings. The success was mainly attributed to novel coloring method we applied. The present paper presents 20 a thorough description of the observed phenomena, specifically including quantitative observations, and 21 attempts an interpretation of the results. 22

A New Technique for the Calculation of Colliding Vortex Rings
The present study involves a novel computational technique, regarding simultaneous use of the pseudo particle method, Poisson integral method and a special-purpose computer originally designed for molecular dynamics simulations (MDGRAPE-3). In the present calculations, the dynamics of two colliding vortex rings have been studied using the vortex method. The present acceleration technique allows...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Vortex Interaction in Pipe Flow
To discover the nonlinear characteristics of pipe flow, we simulated the flow as a sum of many vortex rings. As a first step, we investigated the nonlinear interaction among a maximum of three vortex rings. The pipe wall was replaced by many bound vortices. A free vortex ring moves right or left according to the radius, and that of a particular radius keeps the initial position. The energy of a...
متن کاملOn Approximating the Translational Velocity of Vortex Rings
A method is presented whereby the translational velocity of a vortex ring can be approximated from the total circulation, impulse, and kinetic energy of the vortex system. Assuming a uniform vorticity density, these bulk quantities define a unique stable vortex ring configuration, and the translational velocity can be inferred from this configuration and the system scaling. Here, the accuracy o...
متن کاملOrigin and dynamics of vortex rings in drop splashing
A vortex is a flow phenomenon that is very commonly observed in nature. More than a century, a vortex ring that forms during drop splashing has caught the attention of many scientists due to its importance in understanding fluid mixing and mass transport processes. However, the origin of the vortices and their dynamics remain unclear, mostly due to the lack of appropriate visualization methods....
متن کاملOscillating pendulum decay by emission of vortex rings.
We have studied oscillation of a pendulum in water using spherical bobs. By measuring the loss in potential energy, we estimate the drag coefficient on the sphere and compare to data from liquid-helium experiments. The drag coefficients compare very favorably illustrating the true scaling behavior of this phenomenon. We also studied the decay of amplitude of the pendulum over time. As observed ...
